Local citations and local press: 7 UK services for local business links

Seven services UK local businesses can use to get listed, cited and covered, grouped by the type of business they suit: sole traders, owners who want it done for them, multi-branch brands and firms after local press.

What to take away

  • Citations make your name, address and phone number consistent across directories. Local press gets other sites talking about you.
  • Both feed what Google calls prominence, one of the three things behind local rankings.
  • The seven services below are grouped by the kind of business they suit, not ranked.
  • Prices are shown where published. Paid articles in local media are advertising and must be marked as paid.

Why links and mentions matter for a local business

Google is open about how local results work. Its Business Profile help page on local ranking names relevance, distance and prominence. On prominence, it says this is also based on how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have.

Most UK businesses are very small. The Department for Business and Trade's business population estimates 2025 count 5.7 million private sector businesses at the start of 2025. Around 75% of them, about 4.3 million, have no employees, so the owner usually handles listings personally.

Citations or local press: which do you need first?

Start with citations if your details differ across sites. Our guide to what local citation building means explains which sources to claim first, and the fix for inconsistent NAP details covers clean-up. Move to local press once the basics are right and your Google Business Profile is complete.

A word on the selection. Four of the seven are UK media or directory businesses: FreeIndex, Yell, Reach and Newsquest's LOCALiQ. The other three are listing tools that include the UK in their coverage. Whitespark is Canadian, Uberall lists a Berlin address and BrightLocal does not state a base on the page we checked, so confirm the currency and VAT on any quote.

For sole traders and single-site businesses on a small budget

1. FreeIndex

FreeIndex is a UK business directory where customers look for local firms and request quotes. Businesses can list free, and a paid FreeIndex Premium option exists, though no price is shown on its homepage. The site says it holds more than 450,000 local business reviews, so a listing also gives customers somewhere to leave one.

2. BrightLocal Citation Builder

BrightLocal lists the UK among more than 20 countries it covers. Specialists submit your details by hand within 7 days, and listings usually go live in 7 to 14 days, though some take up to 6 weeks. Citations cost $3.20 each, or $2 with bulk credits. Data aggregator networks cost $30 each.

For owners who want listings handled for them

3. Yell Business

Yell Business is the managed marketing arm of Yell, the UK directory. Its packages combine business listings, managed SEO, blog content, reviews and ads. Amplify starts from £299 a month and Local SEO from £300 a month. Yell says more than 50,000 UK businesses use it, and its lead guarantee applies to managed ads.

4. Whitespark Listings Service

Whitespark was founded in 2005 in Edmonton, Canada, and lists the UK among countries for its clean-up and building packages. The team audits name, address and phone variations, fixes them and builds new listings. Published packages, for US locations, start at $399 per location; UK prices appear at checkout. Projects take 4 to 6 weeks. Compare it with BrightLocal in our BrightLocal vs Whitespark guide.

5. Uberall

Uberall describes itself as a multi-location marketing platform and lists a Berlin address. Its listings product publishes location data across more than 150 directories, including Google, Apple, voice search and AI tools. Its UK page quotes KFC UK and Ireland as a customer. Pricing is by request. See our multi-location SEO guide for how branch pages fit in.

6. Reach Solutions

Reach Solutions sells advertising across Reach's print and online titles, including sponsored content, newsletters, video and hyper-local advertising. It cites more than 130 titles and 42 million monthly unique visitors, and says 70% of UK adults get local news from Reach, sourcing these to Ipsos and JICREG 2025. Prices are in its media pack.

7. LOCALiQ (Newsquest)

LOCALiQ is part of Newsquest Media Group. It sells content marketing, print and display advertising and business listings, delivered alongside more than 200 news brands. Common questions

Do directory citations still help?

They keep your details consistent, which supports the relevance and prominence signals Google describes. Run a local SEO audit before buying more of them.

Is a sponsored article in a local paper a link I can count on?

Treat it as advertising. It can bring local readers and brand searches, but a paid article must be labelled as paid by the publisher.

Which comes first, citations or press?

Citations. Coverage pointing to a business with inconsistent details wastes some of its value.
